As we said in our section about visiting your doctor on a regular basis, the internet is far from the best place to get medical advice from. However, it can provide health benefits in another way by improving your physical and mental health. No one likes to be alone for any great length of time but studies have shown that loneliness can actually have a devastating effect on your health and life expectancy.
Research has shown that people, especially seniors, that are lonely have a higher risk of developing dementia or depression, and have a shorter lifespan. They also found that lonely people have higher levels of stress hormones that cause inflammation, or swelling, linked to arthritis and diabetes.
You don’t have to just use the internet to stay in touch, volunteer work or simply helping someone in need will not only improve your health but the health of others as well as do something for your community.
