In the middle of 2020, a theory started to gain some traction, one that posits that the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks, more commonly known as 5G, was somehow either the cause of the virus, was being used to spread it more effectively or both. So seriously did some people take this theory that they began setting fire to 5G towers in Cyprus, Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, Croatia and most notably the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The U.K. in particular has embraced this theory, with 61 suspected arson attacks against telephone masts, largely due to one man. The well known conspiracy theorist and credibility void, David ‘the Queen of England is a 10ft shape shifting, blood drinking, alien lizard’ Icke has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for this theory in the English speaking world.
