The First state might not be the first when it comes to worst debts, but it’s getting pretty close. The state was at an $8.6 billion deficit in 2019, and taxpayers would have to pay $24,900 to alleviate some of that burden.

Since March, 15,975 people have lost their jobs. The pandemic has made it hard for them to keep up with household expenses, and 136,914 residents say they find it difficult to pay bills on a monthly basis. Another 83,269 are having an even worse time.

Massachusetts

With Massachusetts debt reaching a staggering $80.9 billion, taxpayers would have to pay as much as $30,000 in order to pay it all off. Naturally, COVID-19 has also ‘helped’ in bumping those numbers up in 2020.

Since March 13, 76,319 people have lost their jobs, and another 73,506 expect to lose their jobs soon, too, meaning that the numbers could double in a matter of weeks.

Most concerning of all, 27,733 residents have reported not having enough to eat during these hard times, while another 576,050 people are worried about their usual household expenses.
