30. North Dakota

  • Median household income/paycheck: $2,273.62
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $943.76
  • Percentage of leftover income: 41.51 percent

Because North Dakota residents benefit from a relatively high median household income, they actually have more than 41 percent of their salaries left over after covering monthly expenses. Plus, the Peace Garden State is known for its booming oil industry, meaning that people get easily employed, earning more than most U.S. citizens.

29. Florida

  • Median household income/paycheck: $1,880.77
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $795.36
  • Percentage of leftover income: 42.29 percent

In the bottom half of the country ranks Florida’s median household income. And you might think that’s sad, but why are most adults eager to retire in there? Because the Sunshine State can brag about having a low cost of living. So, even though some states have higher incomes, it doesn’t necessarily mean that their residents live comfortably there.

Plus, Florida is actually one of the few states (seven, to be specific) that has virtually no income tax.
