22. South Carolina

  • Median household income/paycheck: $1,803.77
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $813.03
  • Percentage of leftover income: 45.07 percent

Even though their incomes are quite low, a low living cost gives South Carolina residents the reason to go further. If we look at the numbers, Palmetto State has the 9th-lowest median household income in the nation, but that doesn’t stop its residents from living comfortably.

21. West Virginia

  • Median household income/paycheck: $1,640.15
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $743.74
  • Percentage of leftover income: 45.35 percent

A low cost of living is responsible for a 45 percent income left in the West Virginia residents’ pockets. However, even though they could easily put some money aside, West Virginia residents aren’t interested in saving money. In fact, according to a survey, the state is at the bottom when it comes to the amount of money saved by its residents.
