38. New Hampshire

  • Median household income/paycheck: $2,634.04
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $911.96
  • Percentage of leftover income: 34.62 percent

Indeed, the Granite State has the 7th-highest median household income in the nation. Still, people here are most likely to live paycheck to paycheck due to New Hampshire’s really high living costs, especially when it comes to health, utility, and food costs.

37. Washington

  • Median household income/paycheck: $2,417.23
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $849.72
  • Percentage of leftover income: 35.15 percent

Because the state has a pretty high median household income, its residents can enjoy more than one-third of their salaries after checking all expenses. However, that’s not really much, considering other states.
