H&M | DESTROYING UNSOLD MERCH
In 2010, Swedish fashion retailer H&M was accused of destroying its unsold clothing, after a university student discovered piles of shredded clothes in dumpsters outside an H&M store in Manhattan. The same thing was also seen at a Walmart store.
This led to people denouncing the two stores for destroying garments that didn’t sell instead of donating them to charity, in an unethical attempt to prevent them from affecting in-store prices. H&M denies such accusations and expressed their intentions to investigate the matter. ‘We are puzzled why some media is suggesting that we would destroy other products than those required. There is absolutely no reason for us to do such a thing’, said an H&M spokeswoman in a statement.
