Data and methodology
To rank the cities where people living alone opt for buying instead of renting, we analyzed data on the 100 largest cities in the nation, using two indicators:
- Percentage of owner-occupied one-person households in 2015.
- Percentage of owner-occupied one-person households in 2019.
The data has been collected from information made available by the Census Bureau’s 2015 and 2019 one-year American Community Surveys.
To make our list of cities with single homeownership rates on the rise, we calculated the difference between the percentage of single owner-occupied households in 2019 and the percentage in 2015. The cities in our top 10 are those with the largest difference between those two years of reference.
