10. Ohio

  • Median household income/paycheck: $1,949.00
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $942.71
  • Percentage of leftover income: 48.37 percent

Right at the bottom half of the country, we can find Ohio’s median household income. However, thanks to its low living expenses, especially when referring to housing costs, Ohio residents can end up with more than 48 percent of their paychecks left after covering everything. So, if you want to become a homeowner, Ohio is the best place for you without hurting your pockets.

9. Michigan

  • Median household income/paycheck: $1,953.96
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $946.70
  • Percentage of leftover income: 48.45 percent

Just slightly higher than Ohio, the median household income in Michigan scores better than in Ohio. Plus, due to the state’s low living costs, most Michigan residents can actually retire rich. Sounds great, huh?
