40. Rhode Island

  • Median household income/paycheck: $2,245.65
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $635.87
  • Percentage of leftover income: 28.32 percent

The Ocean State residents live better than several Americans, such as Vermont or Oregon residents. Still, the living cost is relatively high. So, having a high median household income doesn’t help that much when most of the salary goes toward the cost of living.

39. Maine

  • Median household income/paycheck: $1,954.85
  • The leftover income after covering monthly expenses: $646.52
  • Percentage of leftover income: 33.07 percent

Although there are other New England states with higher living costs than Maine, people here don’t earn as much as you may think. In Maine, the median household income is $1,954.85, meaning that people here have less than 34 percent of their paychecks left after getting rid of monthly expenses.
