Groceries

As fears of being locked indoors for long stretches of time gripped the American public, people started stocking up on groceries in record time. We all remember the dreaded shortages and the endless stream of terrifying pictures of empty shelves, right?

Unsurprisingly, we spent 17% more on weekly groceries than we did before the pandemic, according to a study by the LendingTree. Before COVID-19, we spent about $163 on average.

After? We left with $190 worth of groceries. With $760 spent in a month, in just 10 months we parted ways with a staggering $7,600. If you add what we spent in January and February, we spend $8,904 on groceries so far in 2020.
Streaming Services

It’s not just fridge-favorites that we spent more money on during the pandemic. As our stream of entertainment dwindled to a near halt, we had to look for other ways to have fun while stuck indoors. Luckily, streaming services have been a part of our daily lives for a while now, so it made sense that most American households turned more attention towards them.

Since January, we spent an average of $1 billion per month on video streaming services, according to Grabyo. What’s more, 25% of people added another service to their existing list, so if you already had a Netflix subscription, for example, you might have also bought a Disney+ subscription.

Estimates show that we paid $16.9 billion on these services in 2020 compared to $15.9 million in 2019.
