6. St. Louis, Missouri

Situated on the western bank of the Mississippi River and known as the “Gateway to the West”, St Louis has a population of a little over 300,000 who would not be very proud of the record they set in April 2017, the highest murder rate, per capita, in the United States. Despite these high crime rates relative to other American cities the rates have declined since their peak in 1993, however, rates of violent crime remains 6 times higher than the national average.

Murder – 187 – Rate per 1,000 – 0.62
Rape – 310 – Rate per 1,000 – 1.02
Robbery – 1453 – Rate per 1,000 – 4.80
Assault – 3577 – Rate per 1,000 – 11.81

Chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime – 1 in 55
