When Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine and Broadway star Ethel Merman got married on June 27, 1964, in a star-studded ceremony, it would seem to be a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, there was one slight problem, they couldn’t stand each other, as they would find out on their honeymoon.
There are always both sides to any story but according to Borgnine, when the two newlyweds were honeymooning in Hawaii, Kyoto, Tokyo and Hong Kong, the public would recognize him but failed to recognize Merman, which made her jealous. According to Merman, Borgnine just married her for her money.
While we can’t say for sure who is right and who is wrong (maybe they’re both right), it would be Borgnine who would apparently call the whole thing off on August 7, just 32 days after tying the knot.
