The transcripts may have been released in 2008, but it wouldn’t be until February 2016 that the public would get to hear for the first time exactly what the three astronauts heard 47 years previously. In a documentary NASA made about the Apollo 10 mission, you can hear a mysterious hum and an eerie woo-woo sound. The fact that all three men were out of contact with Earth at the time they heard these sounds and it lasted for an hour, must have been an unsettling experience, to say the least.

NASA has always maintained they know exactly what caused the sounds, attributing them to simple radio interference between the instruments of the command module and lunar module, but as many people think the acronym NASA stands for Never A Straight Answer, it’s unsurprising that many believe this whole thing smacks of a cover-up. They suggest that the astronauts were witnesses to an alien signal and that’s why they chose to stay silent about the event all those years.

However, it should be noted that not only was this at the height of the Cold War and the space race was in full swing, many astronauts and test pilots adopted what’s called a ‘lie to fly’ policy. There have been hundreds of occasions where astronauts and aviators have seen and heard some bizarre things while up in the sky or floating through space and choose to remain silent because discussing such things might not only ground them but open them up to ridicule.
