Your employer could try to make your role redundant when he/she wants you to retire. In fact, your boss could even “delete” your job position in the company to get rid of you. It’s definitely not a subtle move, and no one wants to experience it, but it can happen.

Eliminating your position for good ensures your boss that you’ll leave soon after that. They can’t force you to retire when they want, but if they eliminate your job position, you are less likely to ask for a new position; this way, they hope you’ll retire eventually.
